Disheartened by futile combat, appalled by the corruption of their South Vietnamese ally, and constantly endangered by the incompetence of their own company commander, the young men find a possible way out of the war. They are told that if they purposely lose a soccer game against a South Vietnamese team, they can spend the rest of their tour playing exhibition games behind the lines.

Great first arc that doesn’t maintain though acts two and three unfortunately. The training sequences and esp. the exchanges that involve R. Lee Ermey are the best. When they head into battle it’s still decent but that last act with the soccer game feels a little too contrived. Also much of the building drama fizzles by then.
I had originally considered this for my upcoming “childhood films” project b/c I was certain I had seen it around the time it was released (I feel like it was a staple of HBO) but other than clips I knew I hadn’t seen the entire film. Figured I’d just watch it now. Plus I love babyfaced Andrew Stevens. Stan Shaw is terrific.
