Viewing Notes

So I’m mark for Pyun films; some call me a Pyun apologist. I simply like the dude for his ability to create (mostly) enjoyable flicks on shoestring budgets. Spitfire is one such example (of several). As a distant cousin of Gymkata, Spitfire stirs up the same pot of ingredients for a wholly different result. And probably a result that could have been better.

This isn’t to say it’s bad because it’s actually a very watchable film side-loaded with couple of B-movie stalwarts in Henriksen and Thomerson to support our unknown heroine. Toss in a Sarah Douglas and you’ve definitely got my attention. Newcomer Kristie Phillips is likable as the lead and it’s unfortunate she did not go on to do more.

The cat and mouse story is the weakest element giving the actors little to work with which is probably why they ham it up. They seem very aware of the film they making and make the most of chewing scenery. No problem there. Just wish Phillips was given a little more to do other than karate kick bad guys. But overall not bad and one I’d watch again.

Also props to Debra Jo Fondren for doing the entire opening scene topless (when it wasn’t even necessary). She looks great and she should be proud she still has it 18 years after her Playmate pictorial. Really curious why she didn’t work again after this film.
