This menacing monster yarn stars James Van Der Beek as government scientist Dan Leland, who’s sent to investigate reported sightings of a giant squidlike beast that’s put the entire population of a fishing village on edge. Though Leland starts his journey confident that this sea creature with an insatiable appetite is the stuff of old legends, a string of horrific occurrences soon begins to change his mind.

Big surprise! Another expiring Maneater flick and one I sought out b/c of one James Van Der Beek. And maybe *this* one is the best I’ve seen out of the 6 or so (they’ve gotten gradually better with each one I’ve watched).
Read and disagree w/HMAD review that this is a boring film or first 70 minutes nothing happens. Um, Brian, you’ve seen plenty of horror films with this exact same model of building suspense to finally go balls out at the end. Your assessment confuses me.
Why is this the best one so far? Firstly, use of practical FX for the monster squid. Not in every instance but quite a bit and more than any of the previous flicks I’ve seen. Secondly, the film actually makes an effort to character build and get us acclimated w/these people hence MAKING US GIVE A SHIT. Christ, Brian, I’m really sorry that someone doesn’t die every 5 minutes or whatever. I love that slow build to the finale.
No, this is not a great film but it’s pretty good for a Maneater.
