Ever since I first viewed this in theater I knew it was something I’d want to watch with Yumi. She’s not big on watching movies but once she’s tuned in she enjoys the experience. Of course, to get her tuned in the movie has to appeal to her. This one seemed nearly perfect and I was right.
While mostly a “save our rec hall” story, the subplot of the two teens falling in love is really the core. And while not inherently Japanese, still plenty of JP nuances to make it effectively so. Will never be considered one the great Ghibli films, I still adore this one. Yumi found it quite entertaining and that was all I wanted. =)
