F for Fake (1973)

Directed by Orson Welles

Documentary

Overview

Documents the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

Viewing Notes

Been putting it off too long but because Exit Through the Gift Shop was added to Instant Watch it renewed my interesting in seeing F is for Fake (1974). This Orson Welles helmed documentary is very interesting in that it doesn’t feel like a documentary with several really spectacular shots that add a touch of whimsy to the discussion of fakery. Definitely a suitable film to watch with ETtGS.
