Director Teruo Ishii’s third to last film before his death in 2005, based on the manga by Yoshiharu Tsuge, is a wild tale of a failed manga artist in search of something in an attempt to regain purpose. Yet instead of getting better he descends down a darker path of surreal visions and experiences.
Tadanobu Asano portrays this despondent man rather well not having to give much to this role. It’s the story around him that makes this a fascinating journey and downward spiral when lines blur between reality and hallucination. Wouldn’t classify this as a great film but certainly an interesting experimental endeavor.
