Another big blindspot but more recently when this film came on my radar. Since viewing Sorcerer earlier this year I’ve really wanted to see this film and finally carved out 2.5 hours to do just that (honestly, its length is what has kept me from viewing sooner).
While I still favor Sorcerer this is a damn good film and definitely deserves all the praise it gets. Interesting to compare the two films in how they portray the men and the mission. This film does all the best character building during the drive, which is nearly 2/3 of the film. And despite knowing what would happen it doesn’t lessen any of the tension. I would say this adaptation is definitely more tragic but not having read the book I can’t say how faithful it is.
Definitely a great movie and highly recommended. It’s surprising how well paced it is for its length. The first hour is a bit slow but it picks up as the mission gets going. I really like Véra Clouzot and her character, which is a missing element from the Sorcerer version.
