Went down to the Patio for this special advance screening of Vannin’ presented by CCS. Wasn’t sure what to expect or if anyone would come out for the event. Wow, was I ever surprised. Joint was packed! I guess van culture is bigger than I thought. Several custom vans lined the street in front of the theater. Even in the pouring rain the turnout was amazing.
After viewing the film I can understand why. The entire film was shot in Wisconsin last summer at their national meet-up. Most of the vanners featured are local and/or from the Midwest (most were at this screening). Was a very lively screening with lots of cheers and applause.
As for the film it’s pretty good. A quick peek into the lives and culture during the event. What holds this documentary back is the lack of depth and sole concentration on this event as opposed to the entire universe of van culture. It plays like a small capsule in a bigger story with only a few glimpses of that world. But for what it does present it’s very entertaining. I just think there’s more story to tell about this rich and uniquely American hobby.
