This is one seriously dull re-imagining of the Usher tale by Poe. Wow. It’s as though Franco was going for mood and atmosphere with dry drama and mix of styles (color to b&w back to color, speeding up the frames, etc.). But this is a mess. I suppose if you need something to put you to sleep this might work. I’d only recommend for Franco completists as there is a weird visual flare on display but so, so dull.
In all fairness I would revisit if I could see the original cut in its original France/Spanish language. Not that it would help much but at least it would be true to Franco’s vision.
