Didn’t think to add this to my childhood movie project but it definitely fits having been released in ‘84 (yet I didn’t watch it until ‘87 or ‘88). I’ve probably seen this maybe once since that time so yeah been wanting to revisit even more recently knowing how many friends I have that adore this film.
It’s never been a special film for me since I missed it on its first fun and was a little too old for it be nostalgic. However, viewing it tonight on the big screen for the Nick D Show Movie Club at Muvico it really worked for me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s probably because I’m more informed and much more of a Dante fan having seen a lot more of his work. Much darker movie than I remembered with plenty of wonderful bits. I can understand why so many have such affection for this movie.
Side note: for the audience in attendance tonight I was rather surprised that many have not seen more of Dante’s work. And this is a crowd that generally skews older. Just a speckling of hands raised for each movie that Nick called out. Kinda surprising but then again I’ve only seen most of those in recent years.
