Viewing Notes

Very mixed on this one. On one hand, it’s an exciting sequel to the first film full of incredible setpieces and amazing martial arts action. On the other hand it’s a bloated mess of a story that in no way should be 2.5 hours long; it doesn’t earn that length. Frankly, no modern actioner should ever be over 2 hours.

The cinematography is gorgeous. The look and feel is definitely a step up from The Raid. But you can see the fat dripping in every sequence. Some sequences aren’t even necessary. As much as I LOVE Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian), the entire Koso subplot was unnecessary. It really wastes time getting from point A to point B.

The thought going through my mind as I watched was, “would I watch this again?” Because it’s ever increasingly difficult to schedule 2.5hr films these days. Yeah, I will watch it again but it’s unfortunate this film wasn’t dialed in to make it a truly worthy sequel of the first film.
