Onimasa is the egocentric boss of a small yakuza clan on Shikoku Island, whose criminal duties conflict with his self-image as a chivalrous samurai. His struggles with his boss, the Shikoku Godfather, and the tumultuous life of his adopted daughter, Matsue, form the backdrop of this epic tale of justice, obedience, and bloody vengeance.

Need a guy that will destroy you with his stare? Hire Tatsuya Nakadai. Maybe the most terrifying set of eyes of any internationally acclaimed actor. This may be the story/journey of Matsue (Masako Natsume), Onimasa’s eldest daughter; however, it’s Onimasa (Nakadai) that is the pure force that propels this film for most of its 2.5 hour runtime. Equally compassionate as combustible, Nakadai portrays Onimasa as the better man, the chivalrous man, and proud father despite his deep rooted yakuza ways. He’s both sides of the coin yet always the scorpion. Ma-chan is the grace that keeps him sane and sewn together. Another beautifully tragic film by Hideo Gosha.
Another exceptional performance from Tatsuya Nakadai. Another tragic tale of a crime family. Really great movie and really long movie. Captures that period so well (1908-1940). Admittedly the dog fighting is tough to watch. Thankfully there is not much of it. Definitely worth viewing.
