Viewing Notes

Not as good / fun as the previous film but still in my wheelhouse. I also watched this one twice. Mostly because the plot is so weird I wasn’t sure what was going on. On the second viewing I still wasn’t sure if it was either super complicated or super simple (in that everything is leading up to just another battle against the resurrected King Minos. Yeah, he’s also collecting the thunderbolts along the way.

I’m pretty sure Cozzi just filmed this movie back to back with the first one yet with an nearly entire new cast, which is pretty cool. He lifts plenty from Harryhausen esp. the Clash of the Titans (for both films). The medusa scene is stolen wholesale beat for beat.

Cozzi cheats a lot, which is expected from these Italian genre productions. The Amazonians are barely disguised as men until the fighting is over and beautiful women are revealed under their masks. That’s one thing that isn’t in short supply here; beautiful women are popping up in every sequence. Is as if Cozzi had a specific casting call for statuesque models for all the female roles. I can’t think of any women in here that weren’t like that.

During my second viewing I was thinking how neat it would be if they did a master commentary with all the women in the movie stepping in to discuss their particular scene (some are quite short).

All in all this is a continuation of the first Ferrigno Hercules just not quite as exciting. Still batshit goofy (like the neon King Kong vs T-Rex battle in space). I’d love to see both of these movies screened at B-Fest. Perfect for that venue.
