Really neat concept that if done well would make a good companion film with Berberian Sound Studio but sadly this film slowly crumbles over its overlong runtime. Bava could’ve have really tightened this up which may have boosted the sense of fear. The sad thing is that the killer, even without knowing who it is, you already know how it will play out. Which is to say the cheats leading up to that finale become very obvious. Oh I’m now watching the Bava interview on the disc and he’s talking about the cheats! hahahahahaha
The centerpiece is the bathroom kill. Nothing else comes close to that. Too bad because the premise, a guy working on sound for a horror movie, is really great. No clear setup for the killer’s motivation also hurts the film. Not a terrible movie just lacking. Still worth a watch for giallo completists and to see Lamberto’s earlier work.
