Me, Myself and Mum (2013)

Directed by Guillaume Gallienne

Comedy

Overview

How to become a man when your mother and your closed circle have decided otherwise? This is the challenge Guillaume took up. The film recounts Guillaume’s tragicomic battle from the young age of eight, as he adopts the role of a girl then of a homosexual… until, aged 30, he meets the woman who, after his mother, will become the other woman in his life. Beyond this story of a heterosexual coming-out, the film tells the tale of an actor who never stopped loving women, maybe even a little too much.

Viewing Notes

Since I had gone down to MBT for HAPPY CHRISTMAS, I decided to stick around for the opening night of the Chicago French Film Festival. This was the opening night feature. Didn’t know anything about this movie other than it was a comedy. Wouldn’t consider this a great movie but it has some nice moments and humor.

It’s an often poignant look at identity crisis and how a mother projects onto her son her desire for a daughter. The son believes he should be a woman but remains conflicted as he seeks out to discover his real identity. Mostly effective and affecting but some of the stereotyping is a bit much.

That Guillaume Gallienne portrays both the mother and son is the real highlight here and provides most of the laughs. If it was more convenient I’d probably try to hit more films in this festival.
