A wild film documenting a piece of Yumeji Takehisa’s life as an eccentric pornographic artist looking for beauty while obsessing about his own demise during the 1920s. Won’t pretend that I understand anything more than that since nothing is straightforward. Feels more like a stage play and often shot in such a manner. As the third film in Suzuki’s Taisho Trilogy, I’m not sure exactly how it connects.
Most of this movie seems to juggle delusional episodes with reality so there’s never a sense of what is real and what is fantasy. As I watched I couldn’t help but think of how most people would react and dismiss this movie simply for its continual misdirection. I don’t think this film can be comprehended entirely on one viewing. That’s probably one of the reasons I appreciate Seijun Suzuki; he has continued to evolve by challenging the audience regardless of the subject matter.
