I know this is labeled as a comedy (and apparently received as a comedy on its original release in Japan) but this isn’t what I would classify as comedy. It really is a drama that begins with a struggling “famous” actor on his way down then turns to a bit actor working for his new family when the main focus turns to Konatsu, a washed up, pregnant actress trying to do right.
I wondered why Keiko Matsuzaka had top billing on this film but it all made sense by the end when this story really becomes about her in this love triangle with the other two men. Really terrific film from Fukasaku about the studio system in Japan and how actors must remain relevant to continue working in it. Matsuzaka really shines in a tough role. She’s glamorous even when she’s resisting it.
Often tragic there is an inspiring message at its core. Really like this movie a lot. The ending is pretty great too.
