Viewing Notes

I’m sure there’s a good story behind this Peter Bogdanovich flick, his first feature film, that takes a serious approach to harem outer space flicks from the late 50s and early 60s. Whereas many of those were more tongue-in-cheek, this treats the material without the humor beats. Even if one can accept a planet inhabited by the Swedish Bikini Squad (tan lines included) and a rubber pterodactyl, this is humorless.

Makes the film even more dopey than usual. Despite the beautiful women of Venus dressed to appear more like mermaids, there is nothing provocative here. It’s rather dry and nonsensical at times. The astronauts arrive but have no interaction with the women, which is opposite of the films this is mimicking.

Interesting watch for those reasons but by no means a good movie or example of this subgenre. I’d love to hear a commentary track with Bogdanovich. Interesting that his next film was Targets, which is incredible. My guess is that Roger Corman gave him this project to see what he could do. It was passable so next he offered him Targets, which has its own wild behind the scenes story.
