Christabel Caine has the face of angel and the heart of a swamp rat. She’ll step on anyone to get what she wants, including her own family. A master of manipulation, she covertly breaks off the engagement of her trusting cousin, Donna, to her fabulously wealthy beau, Curtis Carey. Once married to Curtis herself, Christabel continues her affair with novelist Nick Bradley, who knows she’s evil, but loves her anyway.

Second film of day two at Noir City Chicago. Really sizzling drama with Joan Fontaine as the ambitious disruptor and Robert Ryan as the wise-ass author, both rotten in their own ways. So many excellent lines from Robert Ryan that had me guffawing. Really enjoyable flick despite the notion that these high society folks seem so quick to wed (and fall in love for that matter). Insecurity running rampant.
Hard to believe that Zachary Scott’s character would let go of Joan Leslie so easily. Guess that’s the power of Fontaine. Mel Ferrer is also a pretty great supporting character.
Fontaine looks like what Chloƫ Grace Moretz may look like as she gets older. Zachary Scott reminds me a lot of Johnny Depp with his mannerisms in this film. Also looks similar.
After the movie finished we were treated with an alternate extended ending (also in 35mm). Can see why they didn’t go with it but still quite fun to see more of Fontaine’s devilish ways as she continues to seduce men.
