Viewing Notes

Stayed at the Siskel Film Center after 39 Steps to catch this film since it was its last screening. Glad I did because it really is a beautiful cel animation film with a heartwarming yokai story. Wasn’t sure it was gonna come together but the final sequence is really sweet.

The yokai are hilarious. Once again I’m left wondering why the single parent premise is so prevalent in Japanese storytelling. I know there must be something to this especially the regret and guilt issues. I wish someone more scholarly than me would write an essay on this.
