Fairly awful remake of the mostly awesome Umetsu anime of the same name. Seems to entirely miss the point of that and yet stretches the story an additional 30 minutes (the anime is 60 minutes). However, on its own this isn’t that bad. Works like a badly mashed up La Femme Nikita / B13 / Kick Ass flick taking elements from all those and forming an ugly, stylized action thriller in dirty streets of crime-riddled Jo-burg, South Africa.
Weird that retained the Japanese names for the two young leads, Sawa and Oburi, when neither are Japanese. Less weird is Sam Jackson sleepwalking through his role. Total paycheck part for him. This is an odd film that tries too hard to be Luc Besson and Robert Rodriguez with flourishes of both but rarely consistent. Loses a lot of steam by the end, which is disappointing after all the build-up.
