Viewing Notes

Hit up the AMC S.Barrington to see this since it was the only theater in all of Chicago that was screening it (and only 2 showtimes). I suppose it got a limited distribution based solely on the cast. Not to say that the movie isn’t good because it is fine. Very familiar story that either I’ve seen before or read the original from Poe. Basically no one is who they are supposed to be.

Really pretty movie shot in Bulgaria that relies heavily on the cast to elevate the story. Something about it just doesn’t click. Can’t put my finger on it but someday I’ll revisit.

Possibly because the movie attempts to spotlight each of the characters without really nailing down any one of them. The original title “Eliza Graves” indicates that the focus would be on her (as the marketing also showcases) yet that’s not really the case. The character portrayed by Jim Sturgess is the central focus. Could be what throws the movie off because he’s just not that interesting.

Still not a bad watch esp. to see these thespians chewing scenery.
