Viewing Notes
Bought the Blu specifically for Kurosawa week! Plus I love this movie.
Blu looks pretty good. Easily the best print I’ve seen so good job by Criterion on the restoration. So many moments I adore in this movie and probably the comedy bits are the best. I really love the tomboy princess the most. Misa Uehara nails that character (crazy that this is her first feature film).
Watched the George Lucas interview again (same one that’s been out since 2001). Of course he admits to the using the story told through the eyes of the peasants device as his biggest take away but dismisses the princess as being coincidental. Overall I think his Star Wars tale is an amalgam of a few of Kurosawa’s plot points and designs.
Glad to have this blu-ray now because I would probably watch this every year. Definitely in my top 5 Kurosawa films.
