Viewing Notes

Holy shit. My buddy Stephen Scarlata turned me onto this when he posted a video clip showcasing a brawl between several of these “Street Fighter II” characters. Was excited when I saw it was on Amazon Prime Video! Finally watched and damn this is insane.

First I’m shocked at the cast they assembled for what is crazy time travel video game adaptation slapstick action comedy. I have a theory that with The Triad’s involvement in HK cinema someone’s son was a big fan of Street Fighter II so this movie was financed. Merely a theory but I can’t imagine how this came to fruition. Also there was no credit to Capcom for the use of the characters, which I’m very curious how they pulled this off.

That said this is still a better adaption of that video game than the JCVD vehicle from 1994. They actually use all the primary characters and their attack moves. Overall it’s a mishmash of comedy bits and stunts with some decent practical FX. Not a very good movie but certainly entertaining, esp. to see these actors portraying these video game characters. They definitely treat the material seriously.

This is one movie where I’d love to know more about and how it came together. How they skirted around Nintendo (there is Mario Bros. sequence too!) and Capcom is quite a feat. So many questions!
