Viewing Notes

Wow. Kinda blown away by how great this is. Guess I shouldn’t be that surprised but with Shaw Brothers’ films it can be hit or almost hit. So many excellent and inventive things here especially the stunts, weapons and misdirection. Terrific characters too. Derek Yee Tung-Sing and Jason Pai Piao are a fine duo with Lau Yuk-Pok as the third wheel.

I am a little surprised that director and stunt coordinator Tong Gai only directed 3 films. Sure, he was action director on many but his direction here is really good. I love the angles he uses often looking down or up in the middle of the action. I presume he was more comfortable behind the scenes setting up the action rather than calling all the shots.

If only every Shaw Brothers movie could offer the kind of action that’s on display here. Also the story is compelling as even I didn’t know how it would resolve. Definitely one of the better movies in that deep well of kung fu flicks.
