The Wong Fung trifecta: Angela Mao, Carter Wong and Sammo Hung! Another anti-Japanese sentiment movie, which was popular at the time as I’ve noted for other similar films. Here the three heroes learn hapkido in Korea then return to start a hapkido school only to upset the *evil* Black Bear martial arts school operated by the Japanese. It’s crazy how awful the Japanese are always portrayed in these films.
Plenty of fights ensue between the heroes and villains. Some really great stuff from all three but Angela Mao really stands out and finally uses her ponytail as a weapon (I’ve been waiting for that in all these Mao films I’ve seen recently). The violence escalates to the point where the heroes have no choice but to retaliate.
Easily one of the best Wong Fung / Angela Mao flicks. It’s also nice to see Sammo Hung as a good guy in one of Fung’s movies. He’s so cute (and serves as action director). A fun game to play is “spot Jackie Chan” who is one of the Black Bear students. I did locate him when the action stops momentarily. Funny he’s given a credit here as he is barely seen (same for Corey Yuen, one of the hapkido students). Yuen Biao is also one of the Black Bear students. Neat to see them before they were big stars.
Pai Ying is the badass Black Bear instructor under the boss Goro Kumon, both are tough as nails and provide some excellent fighting with the heroes. Another Wong Fung mainstay Whang In-Shik shows up to help the heroes and get a beatdown in the finale. He reminds me a lot of Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in his look and demeanor.
Not sure if this one is available on DVD but I’d like to own it. YouTube version isn’t bad and actually looks good on a smaller device (watched half on my iPhone and half on TV). The English is a tad goofy so I’d love to watch with the original Mandarin.
