Viewing Notes

Decent movie from Chang Cheh’s production company in Taiwan. The “epic” fight between Chi Kuan-Chun and Dorian Tan Tao-Liang isn’t quite as epic as led to believe especially considering the build-up to get there. Still pretty good.

The print is pretty awful but at least BCI/Brentwood Raroscope was able to find one and it’s in scope. The subtitles are burned in along with the Mandarin, which is often the case for these older films but makes it difficult to read. So not an easy film to follow exactly what’s going on other than some corrupt officials want Kuan-Chun out of the picture so they bring in a heavy to take him out (Kuan-Chun is a Shaolin sympathizer).

The short interview with Chi Kuan-Chun is neat as he discusses his time working with the Shaw Brothers before joining Chang Cheh’s company and moving to Taiwan to work exclusively for better pay. He says he was afraid of Cheh because he didn’t provide good character direction, which is interesting (just reactions). Wu Ma, who directed this film, gave better guidance around the drama scenes and helped Kuan-Chun be a better actor, he says.

Chi Kuan-Chun’s last Shaw film was Chang Cheh’s Shaolin Temple so I’m going to watch that next.
