Really nice hero’s journey with Alexander Fu Sheng in possibly the best role I’ve seen him in to date. He really has to cover all the emotions and he steps up big. Such a departure from my comedy role in Magnificent Wanderers even with the humor beats here. Chi Kuan-Chun is also pretty good in his shadow but nice drama and conflict between the two brothers.
Took me a while to get on board but things really gel by the mid-point and the movie takes off with some great sequences. First time I’ve seen Shaw Brothers film go black and white for a fight scene, which had me wondering if this was part of inspiration for Tarantino doing in Kill Bill v1 (to tone down the blood and violence). Not sure if that was the intent here but I like the effect which put more emphasis on a major turn in the movie.
Man, I really like Fu Sheng in this and the skills he has. Kinda surprises me that he wasn’t cast in FDV but I’m sure there’s a story behind that as he’s clearly another Chang Cheh favorite.
