Viewing Notes

On this rewatch I feel this movie is more of a 8 out of 10 rather than 8.5 but the third act is so strong I can’t help but give it a bump. I was wondering if that opening night fervor influenced my reaction and I believe it did. Hard to beat the excitement of seeing this movie following the first Avengers movie.

I still think this is an amazing achievement. To have so many moving pieces on the chessboard and manage them efficiently and effectively is a feat. Where the movie loses to the first film is that sense of awe in seeing these superheroes share the screen for the first time. We’ve seen it and seen it done well so this movie is left up to everything else to provide that wonder and fill the hole.

All of that is still quite excellent even with a half-baked villain in Ultron and tidy dismissal of Strucker, who should have remained as an ongoing threat. I like the set up of Klaw, one of my all-time favorite villains, so I’m guessing we see him in the Black Panther movie. The twins are fantastic esp. Wanda. Looking forward to how they develop that character. Vision is outstanding. They missed a beat by not having the Falcon join War Machine in that final battle. Weird miscall as he was perfect that that aerial combat.

I’m nitpicking because this is a pretty damn good flick with most of the bases covered. The Thor side plot didn’t bother me on this viewing. I enjoyed the Hawkeye backstory even more. I guess it was mainly the Ultron stuff that left me cold. Had they set up that villain in say Iron Man 3 to give a little more long term motivation for his aspirations it may have given more weight to mission.

I feel as though I could rewatch the first Avengers right now and not be tired of it. Or even Winter Soldier. But I have little desire to see A2 again. At least not any time soon.
