Guo Jing and Yang Kang are the sons of two rebels. The rebels are killed by imperial soldiers and the boys are rescued by six pugilists later. The pugilists agree to separate the two boys, tutor them separately in martial arts, and let them meet again when they have grown up, to determine whose abilities are better. Guo becomes the student of the “Seven Freaks of Jiangnan” while Yang Kang becomes the foster son of a Jurchen prince inadvertently.

This is a Venom Mob flick?!
Yep, I guess it is despite each of the Venoms represented get very little screen time. Phillip Kwok has the biggest scene but it’s still a small part in the overall movie. Actually it’s quite fun to see these guys in backup roles.
This is one crazy movie that starts in one place and goes to a completely different place by the end. I guess I can see why they made the larger story into a series of films since no one movie could contain it all. This movie is nearly a Who’s Who of the Shaw system at the time. This is a deep cast with characters appearing for a few minutes until the next scene when a different character appears.
Honestly I’m not sure what story they are telling since the movie takes several turns before reaching it’s conclusion, which is rather sweet. It’s an enjoyable watch simply for the all-star cast and wonderful kung fu on display between masters and pupils. Besides the Venoms and Alexander Fu Sheng, Kara Hui also has a nice albeit small role. Tien Niu is also super cute.
I’m looking forward to viewing the next installment.
