Viewing Notes

So watching this I was thinking how similar it is to MAN OF IRON, also starring Chen Kuan-Tai. Then I refer back to that film only to discover that this movie, released in the same year, is kind of a sequel of sorts. But not really.

I think what we have here is the same story retold but during an earlier period of this character’s, Ma Yung Chen, rise in Shanghai. Although I’m not sure how MAN OF IRON is not a sequel if it’s the same character and references this movie.*

Anyways, this is a pretty great showcase for Chen Kuan-Tai to display his abilities. He cuts down an army of the Axe Gang with only his fists and feet. David Chiang also has a small supporting role.

Probably the most impressive special effect I’ve seen in a Shaw Production is Chen Kuan-Tai battling an entire gang with a axe firmly planted in his gut. How they managed to keep that in there for all his acrobatic stunts is amazing. Such a bloody finale too.

*okay upon further investigation, this is not the same character. Just a very similar story told. Still not sure why MoI calls back to this movie. Probably need to watch that one again.
