Actor Stephen Tobolowsky has acted in over 200 TV shows and films over the past 40 years, possessing one of the most dazzlingly diverse filmographies on the planet. But even more compelling than the stories he’s been apart of onscreen are those he tells offscreen. In ‘The Primary Instinct,’ Stephen plays himself and uses the art of storytelling to take the audience through a riveting and moving journey about life, love, and Hollywood. Along the way, he just may answer one of the questions that’s dogged humanity since the beginning of time: Why do we tell stories in the first place?

I kickstarted this feature length stage performance of Stephen Tobolowsky so today was the day all the funders got a code to watch the movie online the same night as the premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival. Probably should’ve used one of my Airs for this rather than my old MacBook. It had a hard time with the stream from VHX.
The show is very good and a natural extension of the Tobolowsky Files. If you’ve heard those then this is basically the same thing in front of a live audience. Tobolowsky is a master at telling stories so even something very simple can be made interesting. I enjoying hearing him here and his stories, all rather personal, and how he ties them together. I think the one drawback is not really sticking the landing on defining “Primary Instinct”. I feel that the longer cut of the movie probably filled in a little more of the point he was trying to make but here at under 70 minutes it’s not all there.
Still a good watch and worth checking out for fans of the podcast and of the man. Nice work by David Chen. Having now seen this I have a better idea of why the movie was rejected from Sundance and SXSW.
