Viewing Notes

Solid 8 for an entertaining breath of fresh air from Marvel Studios. Could go up on subsequent viewings. Definitely had a blast and enjoyed the humor beats in clearly what is the most Edgar Wright movie that he didn’t direct (but clearly his screenwriting credit is felt). Also perhaps the most comic book-y movie from Marvel Studios. Having a very contained story with a smaller group of characters helps. Harkens back to Iron Man 1 and Captain America 1, both great examples of doing an origin story well.

The training sequences are my favorite bits as Scott Lang learns to use the suit and communicate with ants. As the mission unfolds is when it really feels like the comic books and how I know Ant-Man. My favorite Ant-Man story is when he saves Spider-Man from the clutches of the Taskmaster; Ant-Man has to use his ants in a variety of ways in which the movie does wonderfully.

SPOILER: the only aspect that keeps my rating at an 8 is the quantum universe scene. It’s one thing to buy a person shrinking to the size of an ant but beyond that is really a stretch. I kept thinking of what kind of brain damage it would cause. This is a minor thing in a “superhero” movie but I do appreciate some sense of believability.

Anyways, I’d watch this movie again over seeing the Avengers 2 again.
