Viewing Notes

wanted to revisit this after reading about all the issues during production. also I couldn’t recall much of it despite viewing it a few months ago (this is common having watched so many kung fu films in such a short period of time; they become a blur).

To notice many of the filming and editing issues you would have to be very familiar with both the directors tasked to helm the film to understand how this really is a patchwork of scenes with different styles.

This movie definitely ups the action from the first film in addition to more vicious decapitations and deadly weapons. I love, love, love the all female guillotine squad.

I knew that was Akira Ifukube’s score (his scores are frequently repurposed in Shaw Productions without proper attribution) but couldn’t place it before. It’s from DAIMAJIN which I’m less familiar with so now it makes sense. Fits perfectly here with the darker plotting of this movie.

For a sequel with such a troubled production and completely different cast that really barely follows the events from the previous Shaw Flying Guillotine movie, this is a pretty damn good movie. Ku Feng is a super badass as the evil emperor.

Also a rare end credits sequence over the freeze frame before the final “The End” card.
