A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Cruised down to Woodridge, IL to check this out on the big screen. Sadly the AMC Woodridge was the only theater in Chicago (of 10 total nationwide) that was screening this movie. Long drive but worth it to see this on the big screen. Maybe the only chance to see it that way. If this was a nearby theater I’d probably see it again. Lots to love about this scrappy production.
Borrows heavily from ALIEN and THE THING, esp. the latter is almost too obvious the comparisons. Nearly a template for this movie in the discovery of the alien that infects the crew and no one is sure who has been infected. I’m okay with riffing on that because it’s effective. The practical FX are terrific and terrifying. Lance Henriksen provides a stable anchor throughout.
Fairly taunt and well paced for its short runtime. That I appreciate. Give it a bump for that and the FX despite the overly familiar plotting. Definitely worth checking out and glad to have contributed to the kickstarter.
