Viewing Notes

After the buzz at FF2015 I was sad I wasn’t able to fit it in my schedule but was happy it was already booked at MBT. The one-take gimmick initially feels like a gimmick but as the movie progresses that notion disappears. It’s a marvel to experience and probably my biggest nitpick when something like this is used is that I’m often thinking of the technique rather than the story.

Fortunately the story is strong enough on its own that I wondered if the one-take was really necessary. I’d love to know what when into the pre-production and storyboarding to get this result because it’s remarkable. It’s crazy to witness this entire series of events in real time.

I am less enamored with the first half of the film but it does establish the characters and gives them weight that makes the finale a real gut punch. I’m not as crazy about the film as a whole as most others I know (I ran into Neil Caldarone afterwards and he declared one of the best movies he’s seen this year). I do thing this is a powerful testament to filmmaking and how to craft a compelling a story with the simple characters.

Very impressed with Laia Costa in the main role. I’m very interested in the preparation it took to achieve this movie.
