Perfectly fine James Bond movie. No, it’s not great or close to CASINO ROYALE but then again most Bond films aren’t. This fits somewhere between QoS and SKYFALL I suppose however I’m not a hater on QoS and not that crazy about SKYFALL. Admittedly I haven’t seen either of those since their release. CASINO I have revisited. How many Bond films feature a scene on a train? A car chase? A gadget watch?
I really enjoy how the movie shifts from location simply to give fan service to the locations and less to service a well designed plot. Does the house have to in secluded location in Austria? Does there have to be a Spectre meeting in Rome? It’s just good fun to see beautiful places so exquisitely captured on film.
I was entertained despite the mediocre story that seems to lack real stakes (oh, the “double O” program is getting decommissioned, you say? Oh, the evil organization is finally exposed?). The entire security / surveillance thing is silly given how much is already captured today DID ANYONE SEE FURIOUS 6???? This plot is on par with the one from QoS in its stakes.
It all doesn’t matter because the movie works for me. Could be the constant throwback to Bond of old however that was a bit too much wink wink by the end. What did ring through was Daniel Craig’s demeanor; he even looks like he’s tired of portraying this character. His line delivery is flat and it looks like he’s just hitting a mark and going through the motions. Compare to the man in CASINO that was proving to the world he was the right fit for Bond.
I won’t care if EON let’s him out of his contract for a new Bond. I do hope they keep this new cast around him who have a good energy about them. I like Monica Bellucci in this but wish they had given her more to do than be a trophy wife. I’d love if they somehow made her the villain in the next Bond.
