Viewing Notes

Very cool to see this movie on the big screen at NPL in 35mm. The print was pretty worn in places but it seemed appropriate. Astonishing film featuring only women suffering the ordeals of high society and cheating husbands in NYC. Even though Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford are at the center of this, the real standout is Rosalind Russell. I also like Joan Fontaine in her supporting role.

Often hilarious to watch how catty these women are to each other yet remain “friends” due to influence and gossip. Some real sharp dialogue. Not sure when I would have sought this one out on mine so I’m glad NPL screened for their George Cukor series.
