Tokyo Waka (2013)

Directed by John Haptas, Kristine Samuelson

Documentary

Overview

The portrait of a city: ancient yet constantly remaking itself. A poem in images: stillness, patterns, urban motion. And in words: a tofu seller, a homeless woman, a Buddhist priest, contemplating nature, the metabolism of their city, mortality. And 20,000 crows, unruly avatars of the natural world, sardonically observing it all.

Viewing Notes

Super fascinating look at the crow population in Tokyo. Exquisitely photographed with a sense of foreboding. I love this take on the subject and the juxtaposition of nature and urban life. Would be amazing to see on the big screen.

Reminds me of my experiences in Japan and with the crows, which scared the crap out of me. They are huge and everywhere. The fear nothing. Showing the crows at the zoo picking off the meat on the bones near the lion is proof of that.

So cool that Fandor has stuff like this available.
