Overview
Two carefree pals traveling through Alabama are mistakenly arrested, and charged with murder. Fortunately, one of them has a cousin who’s a lawyer - Vincent Gambini, a former auto mechanic from Brooklyn who just passed his bar exam after his sixth try. When he arrives with his leather-clad girlfriend, to try his first case, it’s a real shock - for him and the Deep South!

Viewing Notes
Man, I have not seen this since probably right around the time it hit home video. It was after Marisa Tomei won the Oscar. Still kinda amazing she won but she is so great in this role. She looks more Jersey than Brooklyn then again Brooklyn was a lot different in the early 90s than it is now. But she looks great nevertheless. And she nails that role so hard.
This is one of those movies that despite having only seen it once certain scenes stick. Which is to say it doesn’t feel like I’ve only seen it once. Maybe I’ve just seen clips over the years but it doesn’t feel like it’s been 20+ years since I’ve seen this.
The movie is paced well but it really doesn’t need to be 2 hours long. I think all the hotel / sleepless night bits could have been cut. The court room sequences are really the best parts especially the finale. This really is a well done comedy feature. Pesci is terrific. So is Fred Gwynne.
