Viewing Notes

Probably spoilers below:

Lesser Coen Brothers but still an entertaining movie (and lesser Coen is still better than 90% of everything else). Love the old Hollywood production stuff (the Norman Taurog mention had me laughing especially since I’ve been actively watching more of his films this year ex. Boys Town; wish there had been more of that kind of nod in this movie).

The communism sub-thread is interesting but never really nails the significance of this at this particular period of time. Given that it’s a major plot point (the kidnapping) I wanted more here to round out the reasoning. Nice performances from all the primary actors and supporting cast but no real standouts here (everyone is great; Tilda Swinton is typically awesome). Like you can’t really pin this movie on any one person except Brolin, who is good but really serves as the connective tissue between the others. I suppose it’s his film when it’s all said and done.

TBH Tatum’s Gene Kelly “On the Town” routine is my favorite thing in the movie. I’d love to see a big modern Hollywood musical produced today with name actors like this. In fact, I’d love to see more of all these characters since we live with them so briefly in this movie. Ralph Fiennes is so great too. Let’s see a side movie about him.

Definitely a movie that will age like a fine wine. I expect I will like it better as time goes on.
