Interesting blend of narrative and documentary telling the story of a young woman that goes from a small village to Tokyo, becomes a geisha, falls in love then returns to a small village to be a pearl diver. What I love is the contrast between old and modern Japan. The tradition and customs along side the western influences is presented very well here. The nudity is part of daily life and not gratuitous.
I’ll probably watch this again before returning to Netflix or just buy it if it’s cheap. It’s a nice artifact of a time when old and new were merging post-war.
