The film is set in early 11th century China during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty. The Song Dynasty is being invaded by the armies of the rival state of Western Xia.  Yang Zongbao is the last man standing in the Yang clan, a family of generals who have dedicated their lives to defending the Song Dynasty from foreign invaders. He apparently dies in battle tragically when the treacherous Imperial Tutor Pang refuses to send reinforcements to aid him. Viewing Notes

Another retelling of the 14 Amazons in which this movie isn’t nearly as entertaining as the 1972 version by the Shaw Brothers. It does have a stellar cast of female leads all doing their own stunt work, wire work and fighting. Unfortunately the movie is very choppy as it moves from setpiece to setpiece. I give it a bump for the cast and effort here.

I watched the hour long behind the scenes “making of” feature which is more interesting than the film. It’s neat to see the filmmaking magic to do all the stunts and actually see these actors train and do these action scenes. It’s also crazy and dangerous as everyone gets injured in some way. Viewing this made me want to see the movie again but I probably won’t watch this since it’s just not very good. The sad part about this behind the scenes feature is that everyone really thinks this is a great movie they are making and putting in a lot of work through all the injuries. I feel bad for them since the final product is not very good.
