Mötley Crüe - The End - Live in Los Angeles (2016)

Directed by Jeff Tremaine, Christian Lamb

Music | Documentary

Overview

The bad boys of rock have celebrated a career that has seen them sell millions of albums and perform thousands of concerts. In Jan. 2014 Mötley Crüe held a press conference announcing their final tour ever, complete with a “cessation of touring” agreement prohibiting all future live engagements. The Final Tour ended up being comprised of 164 concerts over two years, all ending with a hometown gig at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. This New Year’s Eve Celebration was filled with hits like Kickstart My Heart, Girls Girls Girls, Home Sweet Home and many more. Now, for only one night, this last ever performance event gives fans front row access. Catch the moments that were buzzed about, such as Tommy’s infamous “Crüecifly” drum roller coaster, and behind the scene moments that will now just be coming to light.

Viewing Notes

Pretty cool to see this final show on the big screen with added behind the scenes footage and interviews. Also confirmed what most already knew; these guys are no longer friends or want to be around each other. The fact they each have their own bus and stay in separate hotels is telling and reminiscent of Metallica, which is thick with irony given the animosity between the bands.

Overall the concert was fine playing most of their hits and sadly leaving out a few favorites and older material in lieu of shit like Louder Than Hell which is not a good tune. Was hoping they’d feature more older tunes. From the setlist posted online they cut Anarchy in the U.K. which was probably a rights issue. Wish there were more surprises in that setlist but understand why they focused on those hits.

For me the interviews were the best part yet sadly not enough of them. Tommy Lee looks so old now which is crazy. Mick Mars is old and surprised he’s still standing. Nikki still looks great and Vince is fat Vince. Tommy has always been the one that didn’t want to rejoin Motley when reunited in the late 90s. He seems most honest about being sick of playing these songs every night.

I also like Nikki saying they aren’t friends and don’t hang out. They just get together on stage and make it happen. Vince echoes that in that the stage is the easiest part of being in the band. In fact he says, “the hardest part of being Motley Crue is being in Motley Crue.”

I sincerely hope they stick to their guns and don’t reunite or perform live ever again. Go out on top and leave that memory for the fans. I got emotional towards the end which surprised me. It’s been 10+ years since I’ve seen them live and they could’ve retired then because I haven’t wanted to see them live since. Maybe it’s just the finality of it all that got to me and seeing it unfold with 4 guys that accomplished so much together and are magic together on stage but like they said, they probably won’t see each other again after this. Kinda depressing after 35 years of this.
