Overview

In 1982, three 11 year-olds in Mississippi set out to remake their favorite film: Raiders of the Lost Ark. It took seven turbulent years that tested the limits of their friendship and nearly burned down their mother’s house. By the end, they had completed every scene except one… the explosive airplane scene. 30 years later, they attempt to finally realize their childhood dream by building a replica of the 75 foot “Flying Wing” plane from Raiders in a mud pit in the backwoods of Mississippi… and then blow it up! This is the story behind the making of what is known as “the greatest fan film ever made.”

Viewing Notes

Hit the RAIDERS! double feature at MBT since I was there for the early screening of Yojimbo. So glad I did. This documentary was so much better than I imagined even with all the great WOM. Really got to me emotionally. Pure joy and poignant at times watching these lives grow over the years as they worked on the Raiders film then returned to finish it. Also made me proud to not be the kind of boss that Alex (Eric’s boss) is. What a fucking asshole. I was screaming in my head “JUST QUIT YOUR JOB, ERIC.”

The final scene they shot to finish the movie is amazing. There is that moment when I realized I stopped breathing. Holy cow is it nuts.
