Viewing Notes

Really enjoyed this movie. More than I anticipated given the somewhat uninteresting trailers and WOM. But Yates is accomplished and he had a solid cast. I suppose most folks are tired of these public domain rehashes. I am. But there was enough good WOM to get me out plus I’ll see just about anything using my moviepass while I still can.

Love the chemistry between Robbie and Skarsgard despite not being crazy about his portrayal of Tarzan. It’s fine but just weird to see his story in flashbacks then wonder how on earth he got that accent when he didn’t learn to speak as a child. It’s distracting given the setup. It’s a minor quibble, I know.

The CG is only half good. It’s so obvious in some places. Surprised the apes weren’t rendered better given the advances with the recent APES films. Most of the time they just look like CG apes. Goes for most of the animals in fact. BUT this movie does manage to make the emotional connection between Tarzan and animals work. That was a big aspect for me, to be engaged that way. So for that I give this a positive review.

Agree with Ron’s comments that it would be nice to have a smaller more contained story but I don’t think they have a choice each time they reboot this character. I don’t think there will be a sequel either bc it’s unlikely Robbie would return at this point in her career. But I’d be for it.

One thing that did annoy me is Christoph Waltz again as the villain not far removed from his other turns as the villain. It’s getting old. Please get this man a new character to portray and not a villain.
