Viewing Notes

Those saying this movie is boring probably haven’t revisited The Bourne Identity in a long time. Not saying that movie is boring but this franchise has come a long way from that original sedate start to this series. I will accept that this movie is a rehash and doesn’t offer anything new but boring it’s not. Unless seeing what is essentially a rehash of the previous installments boring but I don’t feel that way. I was totally along for ride and thrills.

My issues are the cast around Matt Damon. None of these characters are as interesting as any of previous characters (leaving Bourne Legacy out of this mix). Tommy Lee Jones is exactly as you’d expect nothing deep there. Alicia Vikander is given some bizarre accent to carry that sounds like she’s purposely speaking with that accent. Weird choice. Nothing special about her character as well. Vincent Cassel is really the only one worth a damn here because he’s Vincent Cassel but even he isn’t given that much to work with this time around.

Probably my biggest issue is the silliness around the social media plotting and mimicking Facebook. It’s as though the writers read some Wired articles then crafted a story around that. Additionally the tech on display is also goofy garbage. Most of this feels like a throwback to the late 90s and mid-00s.

I suppose much of this is why this movie has generated the negative reviews which I totally understand. But I like Bourne and Matt Damon and there’s enough here that I enjoyed.
