Viewing Notes

Really enjoyed this flick much more than I expected. It was hard to get my head around how a live action big screen adaptation of this character would work given the source material. Would it translate and not be hokey and look silly.

Glad this movie proved otherwise because it’s an honest to goodness great movie and one of the better Marvel Comics films. I had goosebumps during the opening action sequence and from that point I was on board. Cumberbatch is very good portraying the arrogant surgeon but his unfortunate accident that sends him on his path is the only thing here that feels mishandled and too convenient. That’s a minor issue really. Everything else is handled quite well including the cast.

I like that Mads, Tilda and Scott Adkins are now part of the MCU. And super glad Adkins was given something to do rather than stand around (I kinda feel that was a director/writer decision knowing those guys are big fans of his). Probably the only weak point in the movie is the central story (after the origin). And there’s no real sense of time which is ironic given all the plot points around the concept of time. Strange begins his training and gets a few skills then suddenly he’s thrust into battle and manages to succeed. Feels rushed. Again, a minor issue but did make me wonder how good Strange was to pick up these skills so quickly to be that good in battle.

By the end I already wanted to watch this again. The 3D is pretty decent and not distracting. Definitely worth viewing that way for all the visual FX. Both stingers at the end are interesting although the one with Thor is tad off with the framing almost as if each character were filmed at different times in different places.
