Hard to believe I haven’t seen this since I started logging my films in 2009. Prior to that I’ve probably seen this 3 or 4 times including when it premiered in US theaters in 1996. As far as I know it’s the first Jackie Chan film I saw in theaters. I recall that I was pretty stoked to see this when I was living in Cleveland. Most if not all of my audience were Asian.
So I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for this movie even though it’s not one of his better films. It’s just the one I remember the most and still has some quality scenes and action. Also it has Françoise Yip looking fine. I was always never cool with Jackie and biker gang making peace after they fuck him over in the alley. But I guess that’s how great Jackie really is… to forgive them and work together.
Weird that IMDb lists this as comedy when it’s really not at all. Sure it has a few humor beats but it’s a full on action crime thriller. Dudes are getting thrown into a tree shredder! One thing that is truly funny is that they shot this Vancouver yet it’s set in NYC. They have all the establishing shots of NYC but it’s clearly in Vancouver esp. during that hovercraft chase when you can see the mountains in the background.
Lastly it’s a shame that in Jackie’s first big crossover film Anita Mui is cast as a supporting character and more as a side joke character. Granted she wasn’t a known quantity in the US but she was at her career peak at the time in China/HK. She deserved better.
