Viewing Notes

Great example of a movie leaving zero impression. I *know* I saw this in theater, in my hometown as a matter of fact at the budget cinema. Absolutely nothing is remotely familiar to me about this story or plot or anything but the main cast of characters. It’s honestly like I’m seeing this for the first time. Also I thought this was a late 90s movie but it’s 2002.

Even more weird is that James Gunn developed the story and wrote the screenplay. And the story isn’t half bad although I wish it wasn’t mystical in nature and more like the fake ghost plots of the original cartoon series.

Everyone is so young in this. Linda and Sarah look incredible (this was also the year Sarah and Freddie got married). Hard to believe she was only 25yo then. It’s interesting how risqué this is given the property and that it’s supposed to be a family film. It’s really not for small children unless you want to explain a lot of the jokes, sexual references and intentional cleavage. Oh speaking of did I mention that a young Isla Fisher is in this too?!

Also nothing dates a movie like putting in a flavor of the month/year rock band in the movie… here I present Sugar Ray. The CG is dated as well (mostly the demon stuff).  Overall this is not a good movie but it’s efficient running under 90min and still very watchable for this cast.

The deleted scenes are particularly fascinating and provide a darker tone. Wish they had been kept in the finished film. They actually help the narrative. Listened to some of the cast commentary and watched the SMG kung fu featurette. They brought in a HK action crew for that so it’s neat to see her get wired up but they only show her stunts and not the stunt woman who does most of the real action.
